The foothills of Montecito - California

The exceptional Californian light, which is ever-changing throughout the day, is Julie Pointer Adams eternal inspiration. The 34-year-old freelance writer and photographer resides in a small area of Santa Barbara, California called Montecito with her husband, Ryan and their almost-2-year-old son, Oliver surrounded by the ocean on one side, mountains on the other, and a creek that runs next to their house. Recently Julie has taken up water colouring again with her son (a lifelong passion of hers) and is enjoying new music by Phoebe Bridgers and revisiting old favourites by Sufjan Stevens.

Photography: Ryan Adams.

Where’s your favourite place?
Anywhere that feels wild is my favourite place! But this particular location is a unique spot that’s tucked into the foothills of Montecito, the town where I grew up and currently live.

Why is this your favourite place?
I have so many fond memories of playing among these grassy hillsides and eucalyptus trees as a child since this spot is just above the neighbourhood, where I grew up. I moved back here in adulthood and hiked up this hill every day for a season — it has become a very healing and therapeutic place for me. It feels far away and above all, away from the stresses of the day.

When did you experience the place for the first time?
I’m sure I came here first as a child, playing with friends or perhaps hiking with my family.

Things you usually do when you're there?
Usually, I’m just walking by myself — or perhaps with my husband and my young son — thinking or talking about the day. Looking out over the beauty of Montecito and Santa Barbara, and breathing in the fresh, still air all around me. Hearing the mourning doves coo, the hawks calling out, and the swishes and creaks of the eucalyptus trees overhead.

Is it a place you like to visit by yourself or with someone?
This is always a special place to savour alone or to share with a loved one.
